Hackmatrix '26: A high-performance hackathon platform built with Next.js, FastAPI, and S3 for seamless project hosting and collaboration.

overview
Engineered a high-performance, full-stack web platform for Hackmatrix '26, leveraging a modern technology stack to deliver a seamless user experience and robust backend infrastructure. The frontend was built using Next.js and Tailwind CSS, ensuring rapid page loading, responsive design across all devices, and an intuitive interface for participants. By implementing server-side rendering and optimized API routes, the application achieved superior performance metrics, enabling real-time data fetching and instant user interactions without compromising on visual fidelity.
On the backend, I developed a scalable RESTful API using FastAPI and Python, designed to handle concurrent requests efficiently and maintain strict data integrity. The system features a sophisticated file management solution integrated with S3/R2 object storage, allowing for secure, scalable, and low-latency handling of user-uploaded assets such as project demos, media files, and documentation. This architecture ensures that static content delivery is offloaded from the primary application servers, significantly reducing bandwidth costs and improving overall system responsiveness during peak traffic events.
My primary contributions focused on designing the end-to-end data flow, from initial user interaction to persistent storage, while ensuring security best practices were adhered to throughout the stack. I implemented JWT-based authentication, input validation, and error handling mechanisms to safeguard the platform against common vulnerabilities. The result was a resilient, production-ready system that successfully supported the hackathon's operational needs, demonstrating my ability to architect complex, distributed systems with a strong emphasis on performance, security, and maintainability.
the problem
Hackmatrix '26 is a full-stack platform built to host and manage a 24-hour competitive coding event. The project addresses the logistical overhead of organizing hackathons, where participants often struggle with fragmented communication, unreliable judging processes, and inconsistent project submission workflows. By centralizing team registration, real-time project tracking, and automated judging criteria, the system removes the manual coordination burden from organizers while providing competitors with a clear, structured path from idea to deployment.
The technical architecture pairs a Next.js frontend with a FastAPI backend to handle high-concurrency requests during peak submission windows. Python scripts manage data validation and scoring logic, while object storage on S3/R2 handles large binary assets like video demos and code repositories. This stack ensures the platform remains responsive under load, allowing hundreds of teams to submit and view projects simultaneously without experiencing latency or downtime.
